Marion’s Studio would not be what it is today without Co-Founder Virginia Marion.
Her and my Father, Jack, were very instrumental in shaping portrait photography into what it is today. Marion’s Studio, under her direction, introduced to the world environmental photography- meaning they took what was normally done solely indoors outdoors. The craze quickly spread across the nation as other photographers jumped on the bandwagon. However, Michigan’s unpredictable weather created disadvantages with shooting outdoors year round. So the next challenge to them was how do they bring more excitement into the camera room. After putting to use many portable backgrounds, they came across the next big thing that would once again change the camera room forever. During a visit for supplies to a large art and theater supply store in Detroit, a large 12 ft. roll of white paper was noticed in the corner of the store. When asked what it was used for, they told my parents it was for making cut-outs for large sets. That got the wheels rolling and a roll of that paper came home with them. A system was hand designed to hold the roll in place and WALAH!…the first full length high key background was born!-which is in most every camera room today.
In the early 70’s, my parents were the first and only studio in this area to put in a full color laboratory for printing pictures. At that time, it was called living color photography. I guarantee this was a major relief to my mother, who literally spent a huge portion of her life hand painting black and white photos. However, I’m sure there are many of those beautiful, hand-oil painted, black and white portraits still in homes today.
In the years to come, there have been many changes. But one thing remains the same, my mother’s dedication to the trade and her support for what my brother John and I are doing. As we blaze new trails in this wonderful industry, she still maintains her yard to be used for those environmental portraits that she helped pioneer many years ago. Even though the world has become our oyster for shooting, we still do many senior portraits in that yard where it all started over 40 years ago.
So, “Thank You SO MUCH MOM for paving the way, not only for John and I, but for the photographic industry as a whole. YOU have truly left your mark and for that we stand and applaud.
Happy Birthday and We Love You!
It’s March and spring is right around the corner. This is also when Marion’s Studio Celebrates with our Children’s Spring Animal sessions. When Jack Marion started these sessions in the 80’s they quickly became a hit not only with our customers but also with other professional photographers across the country. These images of children with animals photographed on a hand painted background by world renowned painter Lamarr Williamson have won many awards both on the state and national levels and were also featured in many professional publications.
That brings us to today, some of the children that were featured in those early images are now bringing their children in for the same high quality and impactful images that their parents enjoyed of them. So if you have known of this for many years or are just now having the opportunity to learn about it, don’t miss out! You can see samples of this special by looking up Marion’s Studio on facebook or at our website. www.marionsstudio.com There is also a link under the menu tab “get info here” on our website for a downloadable price and information sheet.
We hope to see you from March 17th to the 25th

Hello World I’m Jo Anne Young. an artistic soul dropped off on earth to create amazing art and have fun while doing it. Recently, I attended a National Portfolio Day at Ringling college of Art and Design. They spoke of art and how it is not a dieing means of a career but instead a rising one. If you seek a future career in the Art Industry. then look no further than into your heart and soul. “All the strength you need is right there inside you” If the only time you’ve received an A+ in School was Art class then you belong in the Art world. There is a future for you in the Art world. you just need to find your nitch and passion and find a way to be successful while you continue to do the things you love.
For example, i love photographing and modeling, I also love meeting people form all over the word and sharing music and literature and playing music trivia. I really enjoy getting to know my clients and asking them “What’s Your Story?” you would be surprised how many people will open up and tell you about all the cool things they have witnessed and lived through. People are magnificent fascinating creatures. Life is so short and you only live once. So LIVE!!!
A great way to start that process of living is to join others who think like you, see like you do, know how to appreciate the small things and the large wonders of the world like you do. That’s why we are offering at our studio a photographic and artistic jam session. Just because we live out here in the boondocks doesn’t mean we can’t be as creative as those in ont the West Coast or Upper East side, so come join us Sunday the 26th at 3pm we would love for you to show us how you create art and LIVE!!!
